15 years of flights to Colombia

Spirit Airlines is celebrating 15 years of operations in Colombia, growing to be the largest US-based, ultra-low-cost carrier in the South American country today. The airline flies to seven Colombian destinations, including Bogota, Cali, and Medellin, as passenger demand between the two countries has steadily increased in the last few years. Ted Christie, President and CEO of Spirit Airlines, commented,

“Our Guests in Colombia have really embraced our low-fare, high-value model over the last 15 years, allowing us to offer even more options to travelers across the country and grow our service to seven Colombian cities.”

The airline celebrated the occasion with a $100,000 donation to the Mano Amiga school in Zipaquirá, a nonprofit that transforms the lives of children in need through education. It also offered limited-time anniversary fares on flights from Colombia for travel from September 5th to November 8th, with no blackout dates.

Huge presence in Colombia

Spirit Airlines first operated flights to Colombia in 2008, launching service in Bogota (BOG) and Cartagena (CTG) 15 years ago. Over the years, its network has increased to include Armenia (AXM), Barranquilla (BAQ), Cali (CLO), Medellin (MDE), and Bucaramanga (BGA).

Colombia's tourism industry is doing fairly well, and the country receives most tourists from the United States. According to data by Cirium, Spirit Airlines has 505 return flights to Colombia scheduled in August from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando in Florida. Together with Lima in Peru and Guayaquil in Ecuador, its total return flights from the US to South America are 629 in August.

30 years in Florida, too

Spirit’s passengers from South America can connect with the airline’s network in the entire US via Florida, where the airline has been flying for 30 years. In April this year, the carrier celebrated 30 years of flying to the Sunshine State, where it first touched down in 1993.

Spirit kicked off its Florida operation in Fort Lauderdale and has since expanded to more than 70 nonstop destinations across the US, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
