Summary

  • Lufthansa's new Allegris cabin launch has been delayed until early 2024 due to delivery delays of their first new Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
  • The first aircraft to feature the new cabin will not have the premium first-class suite, as the economy, premium economy, and business class cabins will be launched first.
  • Lufthansa has 63 outstanding Boeing widebody orders, including 34 Boeing 787s and 29 Boeing 777X. The new Allegris cabin will eventually be rolled out across more than 100 aircraft.

Lufthansa has revealed that the launch of its new Allegris cabin has been delayed until early 2024. The first aircraft to feature the new cabin will be a brand new Boeing 787-9. However, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr revealed that delivery delays mean that the new cabin will not arrive as planned.

Lufthansa revealed its new Allergis cabin amid much fanfare in Berlin at the end of February. The showstopping piece was the new first class suites. Before the arrival of the first class suite, we will see the economy, premium economy, and business class cabins launched on an aircraft without the most premium cabin.

Boeing delays Lufthansa's new cabin

Speaking during the reveal of Lufthansa's latest quarterly results, Lufthansa Group CEO, Carsten Spohr, revealed a delay to the launch of the airline's new cabin due to a delay of its 1st new Boeing 787. Spohr remarked,

"May of our guests and our crews are eagerly waiting for the arrival of our first long-haul aircraft equipped with the new Allegris onboard product. The introduction will take place withe the first delivery of our newly [built] 787-9. Unfortunately, now delayed until early 2024."

1st new Boeing 787 delayed

Lufthansa had been hoping to take delivery of its 1st brand-new Boeing 787 aircraft later this year. While the airline is already operating Boeing's youngest clean sheet design, these are aircraft that were built for other airlines but not delivered. This means that the cabin onboard this aircraft does not match the typical Lufthansa offering.

According to Boeing's latest order book, Lufthansa has 63 outstanding new aircraft from the American planemaker. Of these, 34 are Boeing 787s, while the rest are for the Boeing 777X. 27 of these are set to be delivered with Rolls-Royce engines, while the other seven engine options are not stated.

In the first six months of 2023, Boeing delivered 31 Boeing 787 aircraft. This is less than half the 78 Boeing 787 aircraft that were delivered in the first half of 2019. In late July, Boeing revealed that delays to certification on other aircraft programs, including the Boeing 737 MAX and 777X, could lead to 'significant aircraft delays'.

No first class yet

When the first brand-new Boeing 787 is delivered to Lufthansa, it will be the first aircraft to feature the new Allergis economy, premium economy, and business class cabins. The new first class cabin is set to be launched on an Airbus A350 aircraft later in 2024.

The new cabin, which will see a huge number of business class seat options offered, will eventually be rolled out across more than 100 aircraft, including the Airbus A350, Boeing 787, and Boeing 777X, and is even scheduled to be retrofitted onto the Boeing 747-8. It is unlikely that the seats will even be seen on aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600, and the giant Airbus A380 which are all scheduled to be retired in the coming years.
