Nadi-based Fiji Airways (FJ) has welcomed back around 200 crew that were let go during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, signaling the airline is on the rebound and no longer licking its wounds from effectively being grounded while borders remained firmly shut.

While the carrier acknowledges that this announcement represents only 200 of the 750 staff terminated during the pandemic, the carrier encourages those who have rejoined the airline to relay their experiences and concerns to better the airline for the future. The airline CEO noted:

“I wanted to talk directly to these returnees so that we can talk openly, put the past behind us and work as one to elevate Fiji Airways even further as an international airline that stands among the best in the world.”

A Talanoa with Viljoen

The airline's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Andre Viljoen, recently hosted a Talanoa (Talk) session with the airline's returnees to encourage open communication for staff and put the past behind them to further accelerate Fiji Airways to the great airline it is continuing to be. The session was also attended by other senior executives at the airline, who were also on hand to answer the curly questions put to them by the returning crew. Viljoen commented in the airline's statement:

“These employees hold a wealth of knowledge and experience, which is invaluable to us. After today’s Talanoa session, I am confident that we are all united in a common purpose and strategic vision to do the best for the company and the people of Fiji. As the leading airline in the region, Fiji Airways is committed to providing exceptional service, fostering a sense of warmth and hospitality that reflects the true essence of Fiji. Cabin Crew play a pivotal role in embodying these values and showcasing the renowned Fijian spirit to guests worldwide.”

Viljoen reiterated his joy for those returning to the carrier and the wealth of knowledge that they will bring to the airline, and that the airline's people will remain invaluable, and ensure that all will commit to the common purpose and strategic vision for FJ for the airline to continue with its ambitious growth plans.

Taking to the skies soon

These 200 returnees have been back with the carrier since May, going through various stages of training and assessment, with many scheduled to return to the skies in the coming weeks. The airline MD and CEO reiterated that Fiji Airways would remain committed to 'providing exceptional service, fostering a sense of warmth and hospitality that reflects the true essence of Fiji.'
